1. Where did you grow up?

Perryton, a small farming, ranching and oil-producing town at the top of the Texas Panhandle.

2. What is your favorite verse, book or story in the Bible? Why?

Mark 2:1-5.

Jesus' response to the friends of a paralyzed man - "When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, 'Son, your sins are forgiven'" - fills me with hope and joy, responsibility and expectation.

It's funny, and it's filled with theological truth - or at least it's filled with funny stories from which you can mine theological truth.

4. Who are three people you admire?

Julian Bridges (retired sociology professor at Hardin-Simmons University), James M. Dunn and Joanna Knox (my wife).

5. What is one little-known fact about yourself?

After writing a personal column for 25 years, I'm all out of little-known facts.
